The problem with tying circumcision to HIV/AIDS is that we are basing it on the assumption that premarital sex is the norm. One who doesnt engage in it is abnormal-a total distortion of facts. I fault your assumptions on account of the following;
1. Premarital sex is an aberation and should not be the norm. We indulge, but that is not the way it should be. We have corrupted the sacred nature of sexuality 2. You justify failure to use protection 3. Promiscuity is exalted instead of faithfulness
Let us tie circumcision of personal hygiene, but not sexual issues. I do beleive those who do not undergo thie surgery do have their own way of ensuring personal cleaninliness as far as those areas are concerned.

Saj, I thought the discussion was open for all and for good reasons. i respect your feelings, but being real is also important here. Yes, the male cut promotes cleanliness, but we cant restrict the benefits to that. I believe some of this forums are to educate and empower. as much as we preach ABC(abstinence, fidelity and condom use) we need to look into other direction to rid man of this deadly disease. So take it or not, the male cut has other benefits other than hygiene!!!

Jane you are not ignorant, this is very new and research is being done to actually prove that the male cut does reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence(occurence). The US government is actually giving a lot of money for this research and though not yet proved, its worth looking into, i could send you some write up on mail to give you a little insight into this.

...symbolizes transition to adulthood amongs the Kikuyu
am not a kikuyu
quote:
Maria, Do they do it with ugandan men?I am just curious
well, the tribes here are not strict. Mine isn't. But some do it, though-the educated ones and the moslems. I'll say about 98% of Ugandan men are kihees.(excluding my brothers-they're educated but it wasn't easy getting them cut.) People here take it lightly, the way I do. I guess I'm just being another Ugandan.
This is not just a Kikuyu thing, even the Maasai, the Merus, and the Luhya practice the cut as a rite de passage. Know what I was taught during that period? "...circumcision is about behaviour; the body mark is only a symbol"
