Hello, I am interested to learn the language but he does not have time to help (he works andgoes to school)& I see limited resources online, any suggestions?
If in the US there are some learning resources from the university of Wisconsin, by a guy called Bennet if I remember correctly, which can be quite helpful. Some universities also stock Gikuyu books. Check some by Kenneth Burlow, and Mareka Gecaga. I hope I got their names right.
I am sure that once you learn some words and pronounce them wrongly, your guy will laugh his butts off, but all the same he will show you how you can pronounce them correctly.
Alternatively, be a regular visitor here and ask the how do you say ??? in Gikuyu type of Questions. I am sure many will offer their suggestions.
By the way, do you have a Gikuyu dictionary?

Thanks for responding Kanya ka Ndeto; I appreciate your suggestions. I'm in New England,USA (northeast coast). I have looked at books online, some with translations by the author. It has been challenging to me to find much online related to the Gikuyu language, resource books or otherwise. Unfortunately, I hit lots of dead end websites. This information will be helpful. Thanks again, Maya
I also am desiring to learn Gikuyu and also swahili. I am planning on returning to Kenya.
I also have been looking for online resources. I have listed myself for languagae exchange penpals, email and voice..but have had no response.

I have been blessed with a Gikuyu Bible but the sentence structure is different from the english, so it is not word for word.

PastorNjoki, I do not know about where you can buy a Kikuyu Dictionary. I can see you are from Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin at Madison has a lot of resources in Gikuyu. Perhaps they have a copy in their school library. I do not know. Sajini

The next time you come to Kenya, you can get the dictionaries in major bookstores here in Nairobi. Oxford University Press has published too very useful dictionaries in the language (Kikuyu-English and English-Kikuyu). They cost kshs. 1300 and 1000 respectively (roughly US$ 19 and $14) in the bookstores in Nairobi. I have both but they are office copies. If you are still interested, I could check for you if copies are still available here in the bookstores.
In the US, I know that Library of Congress, Yale University Libraries & Stanford University Libraries wil have them in case you can get there.
I will check with the resource you shared. I am believing the Lord to bring me back to Nairobi in by August 19th. Once I am back I will be able to go to the bookstore there and pick one up.
If you happen to stop at one, and want to inquire if they still are available that would be welcomed, along with the cost.
Is there a way to get get off of this post about seeing a man from the Kikuyu tribe...before someone thinks it is I who am seeing him? Not sure how to break out of her to continue under my own heading.
Can you send a samosa?? I am so hungry for a samosa.
Karibu Nairobi. The next time am in Nairobi town, I will stop by and check for the dictionaries for you.
