hi Daad,
yeah i asked him if Dominic was his dad but i never got a reply.see we were chatting and the net went off. Frowner i will ask again Wink

you know, the problem with kikuyus is that all y'all got the same names.no one is "original"-i mean well Cool.
why cant the parents just give their kids their own names? maybe i got it wrong.. Confused

what does this mean exactly? " Nii njitagwo Paul no macio mangi ti Njoroge kana Mathu no nonyende guguteithia." i can guess it means,"yes i am called Paul but my other names are not Njoroge or Mathu but you want..." thats my best Red Face

thanks

hello,

thanks for explaining Daad. Now i get it. The problem comes in when say, you have 7 kids and yet you are the only child your parents have. And your wife, her parents could have like one other kid or none. Then what do you do? Name your kids after other relatives? Confused

It sounds a good idea for when you have run out of names for your kids.

Mugikuyu, what is your name?

Daad,if your father or whoever had a name you dont like, would you give it to your child?

Here in Uganda, you give your child the name of your choice. Thats why many people end up having beautiful names with good meanings.I think thats a better way of doing things.

Maria,
I guess if you got more kids than your siblings, sometimes couples have had to go to their parents and ask the names of "possible brothers and sisters" if they ever had to satisfy the naming system. Personally I find it okay.
You talked about beautiful names in Uganda. Mind letting us in on some of these beautiful ones? There are potential parents here you know!

Ngunjiri,
they are in my language.well,if you dont mind..
Mbabazi...mercy(God's mercy)
Businge....peace
Karungi....good, beautiful,nice
Birungi....good, beautiful,nice
Arinda....God watches over us
Tugume...let us be strong
Baguma....they are strong
Aliyo.....God is there
Murungi...God is good
Ategeka...God prepares

to mention but a few. Basically, they are about what God has done and also praising Him. But some parents give their kids bad names..like..
Bizibu...problems

and others.
Now, I have been told that my name is Eetha in kikuyu.
Mbabazi = Eetha = mercy?
I could give my kid such a name. its a beautiful name, besides,in kikuyu it sound modern.

Ngunjiri,
Got another kid (you want to name) on the way?Wink
A kikuyu friend of mine told me that the first 2 kids i would have (if with a kikuyu) would be named using your system. I dont want this. I want all my kids to have names from both sides. I dont hink its fair if they are treated like purely kikuyu.
first of all,is it true.is this what would happen if i have kids witha kikuyu man? if so then,Frowner

Maria,
No, I don't have a kid on the way. In kikuyu, mercy would translate to "tha" and "etha" would be an adjective that would mean "s/he is merciful"
About Kikuyu names, if you got a boy and a girl as you 1st 2 kids, then they would both have kikuyu names since in our kikuyu naming system, they would be named after your husband's dad and mum respectively.
