Muhuthia, thanks for that piece of info. so with close to 120bn authorised shares, what would the dividend be given a projection of 5bn profit? 0.04cents per share with the likes of NMG giving a DPS of 10bob per share. 10 billion shares in the market makes me think there might be too much supply unless the institutional investors swallow up retailers stock
with Econet and France telecom set to roll out, i think the billions that characterise safaricom may decline. am going to buy this one as a speculator!

The 120B is the maximun shares the Co. can issue, as of now they have only issued 40B shares leaving a balance of unissued shares of 80B (these can be issued at a later date for to raise capital, as bonus issue etc). In this IPO Safaricom ltd is not issueing shares it is GoK who are diposing 10B of their holding to the public, Mbeca iria ciothe tukuruta ciguthiî conolidated fund. The financials of the company are basically un affected by this transfer of ownership. My take is that the market prices are more likely to be influenced by market perceptions.
As you noted for MNG DPS is 10 bob for safaricom in 2007 it is actualy 10 Cents reason being lower pay out ratio and sheer no of issued shares. It comes to mind that Safaricom is still in the growth stage (in terms of market, technology) and therefore preference to investment over divinded pay out. One is more likely to profit from Earnings yield rather than dividend yield.
How much of the success(market leadership) of the company hangs on the inovativenes and business acumen of one MJ ? Could he be planning to leave now that the company has come of age? Why is Kimunya in an apparent Hurry? just some thoughts

The govt owns 60% of Safaricom while Vodafone Kenya Limited owns 40%. 87.5% of Vodafone (K) Ltd is owned by the Vodafone International Holdings B.V while 12.5% is owned by Mobitelea Ventures Ltd. so who owns Mobitelea? Vodafone Intl should answer that question. but as far as am concerned, the issue of Mobitelea owning a stake in safcom shouldnt stop the IPO.its the Govt that's selling 25% of its stake and so Mobitelea will still have their stock. This can be frozen later after the IPO. what's all the beef with professor and mobitelea? the 'faceless' company aint offloading their shares yet....did i read wrong or what?

You remind me of the adage "Kahii kogi ta ithe". I could not have put it better. The buffonery by some of these ODM goons baffles me at times. I wonder whether there is a cure for ignorance or ******ity. I watched "Showdown" last night and was baffled by the genocide suspect aka Ruto togethor with 90% of all the callers' ignorance. Matters are not made easier by our "know it all" presenters whose lack of knowledge in matters financial is not only phenomenal but legendary. It is a disaster.
Muhuthia,
While acknowledging some of your comments, i disagree with a few. I thought dividend yield was a subset of earnings yield. Dividends are part of earnings and whether a company distribute 100% or nothing at all, the difference to shareholder might not be material. Just factor withholding tax and a small proportion of transaction costs, which viewed in aggregate might not be material. Anyway, i dont want to go into that discourse for now..........but i do appreciate your views.

Wakihia, You are spot-on. But my question is, is this rocket science that even a whole professor is finding it hard to understand?

i think he can talk about anything on and on just to talk.Shame.
Like Paka said, even our newscastors and tele journalists are so disappointing in mattaers finanacial, but the worst thing is these guys pretend to know it all when in fact they dont have an idea of what they are talking about. The other day i was watching Citizen business news and this Tony Chimase(business news anchor-Citizen) asked Bob Karina a very disturbing question. 'if the CDSC sends investors monthly statements, how come companies quoted at NSE dont send their monthly statements to investors?'pooh!!

What?!!!I dont believe a business anchor can ask such a question, what a shame! Even if you were hired as an electrical engineer and you turned an anchor, please try and be familiar with what you are reporting! Some of those anchors ask questions that leave a lot to be desired!
