Let me tell you a story of Equity: after the recent Kengen IPO, KCB wrote refund checks to investors through their brokers. Now Equity thought it was ingeneous. They colluded with a broker (the broker had about 40,000 refund checks for investors) and collected all checks that belonged to ANYONE, I repeat ANYONE who had an account with them. This was regardless of whether you dealt with them, whether your account was active or not, that didn't matter.
So I went to collect a check for someone and am told it has been collected by Equity! That person had paid directly to the broker but since she had an account at Equity (albeit a dormant one), they went ahead and collected the check!
