We all pride ourselves as Kikuyus yet less than 0.1% of our children speak the language. Often times,if not always, Kikuyu language is never a language of choice at home, even where both couples are kikuyus. Many a parent prefer to use the language between themselves but use kiswahili, english or that mongrel of a language called sheng when addressing or conversing with their children. Some of our children can understand the language but will never respond to you in the same. This is fast becoming the norm , in the "cities". Why??
The situation is worse in offices, at least the few i have been to. Even where everyone in the group is a kikuyu, people take offence when you speak to them in the language. The attitude changes when you "switch" to English or kiswahili. Surprisingly, people would rather speak something remotely related to english than be caught dead speaking our language. The same negative attitude is fast developing against the use of Kiswahili. The reason given is that corporates must maintain their "corporate image". Curiously, in china, japan,Russia, and other places where people speak their local languages as the national language, their "corporate image" never diminishes on account of this.Business accross borders never suffers either!!
Is it not amazing that we struggle so hard to acquire foreign "Twangs" or is it "twengs" in order to sound sophisticated, learned, travelled etc but laugh at our ourselves when we cannot pronounce "rs" and "Ls" properly.IS it a case of an inferior language???
While our many enterprising folk have found it necessary to establish FM stations broadcasting in Kikuyu, it is strange none is willing to invest in a kikuyu TV. We prefer mexican soap operas to our owm rich plays and drama.
Are we not unwittingly killing our language ?????
Are we a classical case of preaching water but gulping wine???

It's not only our language that is slowly vanishing but even our customs especially during the traditional weddings and other occations which we should be taking advantage to show the world what kikuyu is made of.I only hear stories of how entertaining it is, never have i witnessed a real kikuyu occation!!!
I think what Alley Cat is trying to say is that Tujivunie lugha ya kikuyu. It is true that our children dont speak their mother tongue they think it's barbaric, they are ashamed of it,unlike this other communities who speak their mother tongue proudly.
About a kikuyu TV station this might trigger tribalism between the other communities although i agree that it's agreat idea.
I stand to be corrected

this is very true, but just the fact that it has been highted means we ought to do something about it in our own different ways, in the various roles we play either as parents, siblings, friends etc, so regardless of what language it has been put in most important is the fact underneath (to tell you the truth its much easier for me to read and understand English and for the others like Maria etc) but i think we ought to put in more effort to really understand the language. they say charity begins at home? well lets go back home and put it into practise!!
