While there is absolutely no logic in the principal's action, should the educational system trample down on people's cultural values? Should we also let retrogressive values hamper our national aspirations? How can the two of them be harmonized?

But students from communities that circumcise, and those who dont have been schooling together in Kenya for a long time. Why is this nonsense happening now?

The dubious principal cannot control bullying in his school. He therefore sends the boys home to 'do the necesssary' and then come back after 2 weeks. Should this guy be fired for ineptitude?

sajini wacha nikwambie, tis very impossible for the boys to learn in such a school where the community as a whole(even those protesting about it)regards male circumcision as one factor that transforms a person from chidhood to adulthood though i know even some circumcised men act like ihii's.
Nway to circum-prevent a disaster in the offing, the HM's decided to do the best in the interest of the kids.Sajini, how would u feel if your son was being tormented or beaten up,or worse enough u were informed that ur son has been hospitalised because the other boys disciplined him by circumcising him with a blunt knife or the garden gichiri?
LET THE BOYS BE!!!

This issue is not debatable coz its very simple that even according to our culture circumsition is a must and in most cases it is done after std eight so by the time the child is joining form one there is no problem

just to clear some gas first. this school is in MERU and not in my home town (kiria-ini) muranga.
now, the headmaster sure needs some leaderships skills. One thing we should know is that these boys had not refused to be circumcised-they planning to be. As a leader, the headmaster should have taken positive control of the situation. while it is good for high school kids to be circumcised i think the headmaster should have acted otherwise. by declaring that the poor boys could not continue being in the school with their 'current situation' he should have thought what effects such actions may have in the country.did he mean that our luo brothers should not go to university? does it mean that cut men should not work in the same office with uncut men?

but if these boys were pure Merus then i think their parents failed them. if they were luos then the principal should be indicted.he did not appreciate the diversity of kenyan cultures.

Wangu, this is exactly why we have to change the traditional way of doing things. So that such ugly incidences dont happen. What school need is strict discipline system to contain bullying. In my secondary school, we all shared open showers, circumcised or not, and it never became an issue.

The school was Starehe Boys Center, aka Small British Colony, aka Soma Bila Chakula, aka Coldtz...and the list goes on.

I totally agree with you Sajini on that. It is failure on the teacher's side not to have a tight grip on his school. He should realise that the country has a diversity of cultures and that shouldn't be an impediment to the kid's learning. That shows the extent to which bullying is rampant in this school. As one parent remarked, he is not against his son getting the cut, but it should have been included in the list of the requirements to be admitted in the school. It really doesn't augur well with the h/m's capability to contain indiscipline.

circumcision is a good thing, it is even said to be able to reduce the prevalence of aids by was it 60%? am not sure but it should not be forced, we should appreciate other people's way of living even if it does not sound right to us or by our standards. i live in Kisumu and i know these guys here do not get circumcised, and u live with them cant force them to change their culture even when its a risk to their own health.
i also agree, if its a requirement they should indicate it on that initial slip that is sent together with the calling letter so that ujipange mapema!!
