The World Bank Country Director is stopped for speeding on Waiyaki Way by our privileged Traffic Police Officers, who are rude to him as always and the Police Commissioner rushes in and declares that the World Bank Director broke our progressive traffic laws and is guilty as charged.

However there are a few questions that go begging for answers.

The speed guns that are used by our Traffic Department must be from technology that was developed in the 1930’s because they can capture 20 cars in a convoy and do not catch a lone vehicle – I have been a victim of this scam and have been stopped for speeding while I was right behind a matatu that was not booked.

As the World Bank Director rightly insisted he wanted to see the evidence – of course the evidence could not be produced, the speed gun was NOT at the site of the purported crime – in my case I insisted that I wanted to see the evidence and a Traffic Policeman quietly pulled me aside and requested that I stop causing a scene as they were just doing their job.

The very nice Policeman wanted to know what evidence I wanted and I told him I want to see video evidence on my traffic infringement and a calibration certificate for the speed gun that they were using dated on that day.

Immediately a senior officer stepped into the conversation, apologized for their causing me an inconvenience and very kindly asked me to leave – does the Commissioner of Police even understand what the law is, before claiming that motorists are breaking the law?

Over to you Commissioner and your merry bunch of Traffic Policemen, who also happened to be drunk on the day I got away.

Oh! and could some busy body lawyer stick this into their statue books and give us an informed position.
