I've just gone through the list and most of the names seem to be consistently correct so based on scientific perspective, the word Kenyatta could truly mean a musician. I never knew it either. I don't think Jomo had anything to do with music though. I believe he switched his name soley for the purpose of patriotism. It could be something derived from Masaai language - just a wild guess. Do more research and if you come across something substanciable, dont forget to spill the bean.

Wakarima,I can answer your question from what I know. When I was in primo,a long long long time ago,we had this lesson called cultural Hx.According to cultural history then,The late Mzee was hassling with the british colonists. They got a hold of this rebel and asked him what his name was and where he was from. They had sheng even then.He said and I quote"my name is John Kamau and I have chomokad from Kenya TA "meaning he had chomokad as in come from Kenya ta-central Kenya. The jungus could not pronounce chomo so they used the closest which turned out to be Jomo and ended it with Kenya tta.Going back to Swahili,it could mean that this guy who had chomokad from kenya ta was at that point Taa ya Kenya as in the light of Kenya. He was the light at the end of the tunnel then. Does any tribe in Kenya have this name?If so,what does it mean?

Nyina wa B, I have also heard that version of chomokaing kenya ta! The other version i have heard is of the name coming from a certain ornament among the maasai (don't know whether this is true) and that kenyatta liked to don. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Ngûnjiri®,

Wakarima Only the kleptocrats intent on institutionalizing hero worship cult want tohind under the aura of mysticism. He was happy to exploit the phonology of Kenya for his own gratification. No wonder some people thought that Kenya and Kenyatta were synonymous, and that once Kenyatta died, our country will slide into anarchy.
In Ngugi's Detained, there is an implication that Kenyatta actually sold out. That is why he ignored the plight of the legitimate freedom fighters. They were a threat.
Finally, on assuming power, he grabbed every piece of land that he laid his eyes on.
And many more...

Quite interesting!! i think the version of Kamau chomokaing from kenya sounds like someone was just cracking a joke. u know the way they used to tell us in physics.....that there were these two kikuyus who hiked a ride in a muzungu's pick up, so they pandad the pickup and couldnt sit down ,they just stood. so when the pick up started off, these guys were shoved backwards(but they dint fall) so one of this kikuyu asked his mate í níatía? (whats going on) then when the pickup ground to a halt, again they were shoved forwards and the other kikuyu guy asked his mate 'í níatía?'. so the muzungu came out and said ooohh so this thing is called INERTIA? The name sounds like it has some maasai background but why take a masai name? I think Sajini's arguement holds some water.though they tell us its better the devil we know than the angel we dont. may be the other guys would have drove Kenya down the Mobutu path.......

Wa Wambui, Ati? never heard that version. And that story about inertia has ohorad me sana! hehehe
But Papa Daad, Kenyatta still remained a Kikuyu, while Saitoti has remained a Maasai. In addition, Godfrey Muriuki informs us that Wang'ombe wa Ihura had Maasai relatives, but he did not not adopt any Maasai name, though he could sometimes band with the Maasai against the Gikuyu, or spy for them. Kaari kamundu kariagira miena iiri ta thambara.
How comes that the Maasai who have assimilated to teh Gikuyus, still retain a semblance of their Maasai names, even though in a corrupted form?

However, it is true, like most Kiambu people he had a Maasai blood. When he relocated to the Maasai land he went to his relatives. In Maasi tradition, there are no uniform names. Naming is done by the children. It is their prerogative to call a new born any name they wish to call them. In respect to this, any person who goes to live with the Maasai at the childhood age must acquire a Maasai Name. This is how Kenyatta and Saitoti acquire their fake names.
Paap Daad Iam just concerned by your statement about Kikuyus from Kiambu. How did they end up being Kikuyus if for real the were Maasai's? Or have I misunderstood you?
