Mamanaina

Thanks for your interest in leaning Kikuyu, the language of Mt. Kenya South. It might be easy to learn writing and reading using the Forum or Email, but speaking it might take sometime to speak the language. However, if you are familiar with the phonetic alphabet I would advice you to look into the possibility of having an electronic class for Kikuyu beginners. After you are able to identify and distinguish every sound element in Kikuyu, it will be easy for you to be tough the language. However Kikuyu sound elements are relatively easy to master, especially after mastering sound elements of the seven vowels. By the way, the seven vowels represent different kinds of emotions.

Thanks! Where would I find an electronic class? I could practice speaking with my husband-he is Kenyan and was raised speaking Kikuyu. I could practice what I learn with him, but he's not interested in teaching. Frowner

Hello. I'm a new member to any of the forums on this site. I'm happy to find like-minded kinsmen so ready and willing to assist others out. I have appreciated your information regarding Kamemem FMs learning centre. The truth be told, am a Kikuyu (full-blooded) who badly needs to learn his mothertongue, having grown up in the city. Thanks once more. I've already contacted them for any help they can offer.

Wanjere and Mamanaina,
Good to be interested in learning kikuyu. You could also listen to the kikuyu radio stations: Kameme FM (also available online at:http://www.bernsoft.com/kameme/about.asp), Coro FM and Inooro FM. Try also to look for basic kikuyu texts books, they would help. Don't forget to have a bi-lingual dictionary, it may help. And like all languages, you need to practice, otherwise it becomes rusty.
All the best!

Hello my name is Maina. I am doing research on my grandfather. When he was a little boy in the year 1900, he was abducted by white people and they brought him to Europe. He did not remember the name of his village or country. But he remembered the names of his family members: Keriu, Jomo, Bonjo, William and his sister he said "Leise"?? and my name is Maina. Am I a descendent of the Kikuju tribe?

I hope one person will take a heart and help me in my search.
Thank you
