Hello. A friend of mine is planning on marrying a woman from the Gikuyu community. She lives in Nairobi, and he will be traveling there from North America to marry her.
We know that it is custom to offer a dowry to the parents of the woman, but because that is not part of our culture he is uncertain of what is an acceptable gesture.
The woman that he is marrying refuses to tell him because she says she cannot say how much she is worth. She says that anything he gives is acceptable.
So my question is what is an appropriate dowry to offer?
Quite well put Papa Daad!,hau niwaria wega munu,i particularly like the part that once you pay the initial payment, the "balance" starts accruing interest immediately at an unknown rate!..anyway dowry is usually very much symbolic than fiscal..hau wamwira ta athuri maiganoona..

A woman is not a commodity like a car or TV with a usage guarantee or a service contract It should be a partnership between the two in love without interference from family or outsiders. Sadly, no so in many cases, it is seen as ‘what can we get out of it’ by the family. In the past it was cattle. Today it is only KSH - $$$$ - ££££ and nothing else.

Mbanbo! This is very sad to say though it is true!
She's kiuk he's from abroad. It is a symbolic nini today, and especially if two cultures mix, then nobody should complain about the amount or so. Simply: it is the thought and the joy of the cermony, in a traditional manner, that counts. Get a nice big healthy cow. Thats cool, and useful.

One of my not so close friend told me that he is getting married soon. He told me that he is taking a huge amt of drowry and cant wait to get married. I tried to reason him out, but all his counter argument is
DROWRY IS MALE's BIRTH RIGHT & u need to grab it. His father too is very keen on getting money
and now, I just dint have any words left to put some sense in to his 2 mg brain, I therefore request your kind self to put down ur thouts here. Because tat guy reads this forum quite often.
Dowry is a vital issue when it comes to customary marriage. there are other forms of marriage that do not require dowry though. It is a matter of choice not a matter of right or wrong.
Dowry has its role and should not be equated to bride price
