There is an elegant block of 5 flats in Kileleshwa. Each flat is named after an animal and occupies an entire floor. In each flat lives a Kenyan family. The man in each family is from a different tribe and none has married from his own tribe. Every family has a different car and each of the men have their favourite booze.

Given the 15 clues below, which family drives the BMW ?

The Kamba man is married to an Embu wife
The man in the third flat drinks Tusker lager.
The family that drives a Prado lives next to the family that has a Taita wife.
The man who lives in the flat called Simba obviously drinks Pilsner so that he can "nguruma kama Simba".
The flat called Chui houses the Luo man and his family.
The man who is married to a Swahili wife drinks Guiness Stout.
The Kikuyu man's family drives a Jaguar.
The Maasai wife lives in the flat called Kifaru.
The flat called Ndovu is below the flat called Simba.
The top flat is occupied by the Luhya man and his family.
The family with a Kalenjin wife drives a Nissan Patrol.
The Meru man drinks White Cap lager probably because of the mountain drawn on the bottle.
The family that drives a Mercedes lives next to the family with a Maasai wife.
The Luhya man lives next to the flat called Nyati.
The man who drinks Malt Lager lives next to the flat that has a Taita wife

Yes ... in this particular case "Next to" means upstairs or downstairs neighbour ..

.. expand yr imagination .. someone's neighbour need not be on the same surface altitude ... where they share a wall or a fence ... neigbours can also share a roof cum floor as in the case of flats ...

kunda summit ingi imwe .. ucoke kirathi

The solution is found by logically solving the equations (clues) for the 5 unknowns within the 5 known categories. This is a classical logic problem that can be solved imperically or using logic mathematics like SETS or Algebra.

(haha wakihia na kui ambai mumeria o mundu panadol igiri igiri)

Facts we know from the clues
There are 5 flats, top to bottom, each with a different name.

Each flat has a man from a diff tribe (so there are 5 men)

Each man, has a wife from a diff tribe .. (equally there are 5 wives)

Each family (man+wife) drive a particular car .. (so there are 5 cars)

Each man has his poison .. (so 5 different drinks)

In order to solve it .. we can talke a piece of paper and draw a table of 5 columns and 5 rows

Each row will represent a FLAT

and Each column will represent one of the 5 unique elements found in a FLAT

Now...

Look at Clue number 10 .. The top flat is occupied by the Luhya man ..this clue is staright fwd

Look at clue 14 .. the Luhya man lives next to flat called Nyati. Since he is on the top floor. the only next door neigbour he has is the jamaa on the 4th flat. So flat 4 is NYATI

Look at clue number 2 .. man on 3rd flat drinks tusker .. straight forward ...

So our table should look like

FLAT....FLAT NAME....MAN-TRIBE...FAV-DRINK....WIFE-TRIBE....VEHICLE
.
Top......________.....luhya......._________....__________...._______
4th.......nyati.......________...._________....__________...._______
3rd......________.....________.....tusker......__________...._______
2nd......________.....________...._________....__________...._______
1st......________.....________...._________....__________...._______

Look at clue number 9 .. The flat called Ndovu is below the one called Simba.

Now we know that flat 4 is called Nyati .. this means that the top flat cannot be simba or Ndovu. This leaves us with flat 1 2 and 3 .. .. such that if flat 3 is simbba then ndovu is 2 or os simba is flat 2 then flat 1 at the bottom is ndovu

Now combine the above thinking with clue number 4 which says the man who lives in Simba drinks pilsner .... this clue rules out Simba being flat 3 because from a previous clue the man in flat 3 drinks Tusker. So Simba can ONLY be flat 2 and ndovu flat 1. remember we also have the clue that the man in simba takes pilsner ..

haya .. update the table ...

FLAT....FLAT NAME....MAN-TRIBE...FAV-DRINK....WIFE-TRIBE....VEHICLE
.
Top......________.....luhya......._________....__________...._______
4th......nyati........________...._________....__________...._______
3rd......________.....________.....tusker......__________...._______
2nd......simba........________.....pilsner.....__________...._______
1st......ndovu........________...._________....__________...._______

Now.. look at clue number 5.. The luo man lives in a flat called chui .. This clue tells us that the Luo man cant live in the top flat coz the luhya live there, he cant be in the 4th flat coz the 4th flat is called Nyati and he cant equally be in flat 2 and flat 1 coz they are called Simba and Nyati respectively ...

haya .. update the table further .. ..

FLAT....FLAT NAME....MAN-TRIBE...FAV-DRINK....WIFE-TRIBE....VEHICLE
.
Top......________.....luhya......._________....__________...._______
4th......nyati..........________...._________....__________...._______
3rd......chui..........luo............tusker......__________...._______
2nd......simba........________.....pilsner.....__________...._______
1st......ndovu........________...._________....__________...._______

Look at clue number 8 .. the maasai wife lives in a flat called Kifaru .. with that in mind .. look at your tabel and concentrate on the column for flat names .. its is obvious that the top flat can only be the only remaining flat name and that is Kifaru ...

These deduction also tell us that the Luhya man is married to the Maasai wife !!

update the table ...

combine that with clue number 13 which saye that the family that drives a merc lives next to the family with a maasai wife .. which means that the merc belongs to the 4th flat ..

update the table...

FLAT......FLAT NAME......MAN-TRIBE.....FAV-DRINK......WIFE-TRIBE....VEHICLE
.
Top.........kifaru...............luhya...........................maasai.................
4th.........nyati..............................................................mercedes
3rd........chui..................luo............tusker.................................
2nd........simba................................pilsner................................
1st.........ndovu.......................................................................
