I need some help please for research I'm doing into family clans/lineages in my home area of Kiambu, (Kiambaa) and also Muranga where my Guka's people are from.
If you are from either of these areas, can you please list the common surnames you have come across in your area?
For example, if you are from Muranga, what are the common surnames in your area? You don't have to be from Kiambu. If you are from Nyeri you are welcome to post as well.
--------
I intend to write in the future regarding family trees and lineages, especially in the Kiambu area which is filled with a mixture of Ndorobo, Gumba and Agikuyu blood lines.
By the way, my people on Cucu's side are Njoroges from Githunguri area via Limuru. We are of the Father Lawrence Njoroge (JKUAT and former Catholic Uni professor) team.
On Guka's side we are Kiongos from Githunguri as well but via Muranga because my mama (Guka's dad) moved from Muranga in 1915 to Limuru.
My mama was founding member of KAU (Kikuyu African Union) and former MAUAU. I am also related to Harry Thuku's people through my maitu (great-grandmom).
Wa Mugwanja, Karibu mucii. About the names, I do not come from either of these 2 areas but the names of my friends I know who come from these are: Njoroge Maina - though this is a name of a "riika" Mwangi - though this is a name of a "riika" Wairia Njuguna Gitau Kiarie Mbugua Chege ... and many more
I have also managed to do research on about 30riika prior to 1920, mostly around the Kiambu area. I will post the list kesho for those who are interested. Also many any things.
I have done research for a number of years, first by interviewing the elders in my area (namely the Kiambaa, Tigoni, Limuru areas) then proceeding to read books and go to campuses and various archives all over the place. Our history is long and deep and it is necesary for us to know where we come from since it is a great fool who does not know his history but can give you the whole statistics file of a current Kenyan 'celeb'.
I consider the knowledge I am gathering as a great blessing from God, and as something wonderful to pass down to future generations.
Please bear with me, some of this info needs clarification and further dissection.
Sasa renge túgayane kíhío kíría hetuo ní Mwathani:
It is important to note that the Iregi generation consisted of three mariikas, namely Iregi, Kiarie and Kamau. This is because at that time, the Somali northerners had invaded and had moved down to the edges of what is considered to be the Central Province area today. Because the invaders were threatening our people with wholesale death and slavery, something had to be done.
So around that time, our warriors teamed up with the Maasai and the Athi people's army regiments and as a group, all three fought and repulsed the Somali invaders in successive battles. This is why they were called Iregi.
I am assuming that the Kiarie and Kamau age sets went through initiation while there were still running battles with the Somali marauders and that is why they too were eventually included under the 'Iregi' banner.
But I could be wrong so if somebody knows for sure, please chanua me.

VERSION I -Continued - Beginning 1862 - (no conclusive dates for these)
Njoroge - The orphans age set. (Did many of their fathers die in the war with the Somalis?)
Wainaina - This generation 'trembled' during their circumcision. (Was it because the weather was unnaturally cold in that year?)
Mungai - The ones with 'swollen' faces
Gitau - This age-set ate ngwashes/ndomas immediately after their circumcision.
After the Gitau age set, there came one called 'Nguo ya Nyina'. Apparently they wore their mother's clothes but I have been unable to get conclusive evidence as to why.
Mbugua/Guchu - Their circumcision wounds took a long time to heal.
Mwiruri - From the title of the song this age set sang during the circumcision ceremony that year.
After this there was the 'smallpox' riika when our people were decimated by the disease.
Mwangi - This age set was in 'the dancing place'. I don't know what that means.

More Information on Age-Sets and Agikuyu Expansion (according to one Gikuyu lady professor)
"The Study of mbari (genealogies) shows that the Manduti and Cuma generations (from the mid-17th to early 18th century) are remembered for their raiding and hunting. The Mathathi and Ndemi generations were a time of expansion, when many Agikuyu migrated to different parts of Kenya.
...Sometime in the 19th century, the Barabiu, the Galla and the Somali launched a major attack in the Kenya highlands. Some Agikuyu were driven back. The Barabiu were defeated only after the allied forces of the Maasai, Athi and Gikuyu attacked. That Agikuyu generation came to be known as the "Iregi" (revolters), to commermorate the defeat of the Barabiu.
...Between the Cuma and Ciira generations (late 17th to early 18th century) there occured a large expansion westward toward Nyandarua. The Agikuyu encountered Athi people (elephant hunters), who offered little resistance. Reaching the Nyandarua hills in the mid-19th century, they advanced southward to Muruka and Gatanga, where Maasai opposition began to worry them. In about a century, the Agikuyu had inhabited the area between the south Chania and Nairobi rivers. By 1890, the pioneers had gone beyond the Nairobi River."
Ngai
I don't know whether this is true or not but the same lady professor said that the concept of God as 'Ngai' was borrowed from the Maasai's 'Enkai' when the Agikuyu came into contact with them. In addition to this, we borrowed certain military tactics and initiation practices.
I am assuming this is when we moved away from the 'Mukurue wa Gathanja' (daughters of Gikuyu) matrilineal agenda and towards a more patriarchal system where men became the bosses. When I read Kenyatta's 'Facing Mount Kenya', he clearly stated how men took over from women by force.
Anyway... more to Come.
