My Friend, the Kikuyu way of marriage mostly falls in the girls homes, bcoz if lets say, My brother is marrying a kamba lady, he will have to Rachia the kamba way. N i think the same applies to ur case thea.
But for us...Its starts wth "Kuhanda Ithigi" ama kurathimithia"not sure'
then after wards the paroz of the jamaa sets a
date for kurachia, after thy rachia , thy all drink beer" to bless the goats alrdy given as part of dowry...Its considered ill-luck to rachia all at once.so the jamaas folks have to come bak like 2 time before the marriage is signed. Then a final day is set, wea clan n close family friends r invited. the ceremony is called Guthinja ngoima" six fat sheep r slaughtered, the girl,s consent must b obtained. she has to take part is slaughtering n the 1st sheep.she has also to eat the kidneys of the 1st sheep...
I stand to b corrected.
KOI think you are too fast on that,
There is a contradiction between the Agikuyu old way of Kugurana and the new way.We call it sub-culture in anthropology.Things are changing hence some stuff changes and people think they part of the culture.
Kuhanda ithigi is quite new, remember in the olden days parent used to chose who to marry/be married to.Ruracio would folloe then ngurario and later gutinia kiande.
In the newerAgikuyu way[1925-35] guys used to wait for a chick while going to fetch/collect water/fire wood and then they would steal her [gutaha].Proceedings on the next day, some young boys would be send with a cock/hen to go and through it to the brides premises. These would signal that Nikuri athoni maguka narua. While accepted the guy would racia then guraria after some time [muracia umwe utatira].Gutinia kiande is the last event.
There is culture shock and i think the Agikuyu culture has been eroded alot.Kamweretho might be a newer way, after some years guyz will think that its part of our culture.
