Nsemia Inc. Publishers is pleased to announce the publication of Mucìì ni Mucìì by Marjory Nyakìago Kìmani. This is Marjory’s debut novel written in one of Kenya’s indigenous languages, Gikuyu.

Mucìì ni Mucìì is a story written in Gikuyu, one of Kenya’s indigenous languages, is a moving story of a peasant girl who defies many odds in her childhood to become one of the most prosperous people in the country. Starting in a background of biting poverty and an abusive father, Wahito drops out of school after her primary education and gets a low paying job after another.

Meanwhile, evil clouds are hanging over her horizons. In her youthful naïveté, she lets of the man who truly loves her and falls into the old trap of being lured by a “use and dump” type who has loads of cash to spend. In the most confused phase, her young life takes a downturn after that; and she moves from one crisis to another, including being orphaned while still a single mother.

But fate has other plans for her. She ends up with the man who was destined to be her soul mate. Together, they traverse a terrain full of many risks and barriers to realize the dreams of their lives. Through providence or destiny, it seems Wahito’s life is forever intertwined with those of her girl friends. The story has a gripping climax with a lot of the unexpected happening.

In the final analysis, all (of almost all) the pieces of Wahitos’ chequered life fall into place and she seems to lead an exciting, happy prosperous life. But then, one never knows what happens next in Wahito’s life.

Here is what others say about Mucii ni Mucii:

“A fast-paced narrative with multiple surprise elements flavoured with episodes confronting contemporary societal issues touching on the conflict between urban and rural Kenya as well as the degenerated moral fibre of society.” - Mutu Gethoi

“A fascinating story that underscores societal values, work ethics, decency, the family and concern for each other.” - Mrs. Mary Wanjiru Wanjau

“This is a story of tragedy but also of hope. It is both enjoyable and realistic. Marjory Nyakìago Kìmani skilfully uses Gikuyu to create an intricate narrative of a family whose love, betrayal and bitterness by the Karúrú family in the fictitious village of Gacuca in Nyeri (or Nyìrì). … Read the book to learn what happens amidst the folly of youth, the complications and abuse of alcohol by a father along with a mother’s undying love for her family, the love and wise counsel sometimes offered by others both at home and away”.– Dr Kuria Githiora

About the Author

Marjory Nyakiago Kimani was born and educated in Mathira, Nyeri, Central Kenya. She attended local Schools before joining Tumutumu for upper primary. She later joined Alliance Girls’ High School. After High School she took up secretarial training. She later worked for a law firm in Nyeri.

Born and brought up in the Gikuyu rural background, Marjory Nyakiago Kimani has witnessed the evolution of the Gikuyu family set up to its current form. She also a cultural enthusiast and believes in the family as the basis of any sound society.

She also believes that the truly African family story cannot be told adequately in a foreign tongue. Her novel, Mucii ni Mucii exhibits the passion in telling an African story in an African language. Mucii ni Mucii is her view of what a family is; its values and its place in modern African society.

Marjory’s story does not end there. In the year 2007, she established Furaha Cultural Centre in Mathira, Nyeri district where cultural activities take place including language lessons. More recently, in 2009, she established Bondeni Cultural Centre in Nyandarua district. Marjory is also the Patron of Kigamba Traditional Dancers in Limuru.

As she is proud to point out, her inspiration for culturally based activities comes from her late father who directed drama in the village social hall during the emergency period of the 1950s. As it turns out, her family members are similarly endowed: one sister is a story teller in America, another good public speaker. One brother is a much sought-after master of ceremonies, while another one has written a large collection of stories.

For Marjory, writing Mucii ni Mucii marks the peak in this fulfilling passion. She is currently working on Volume (II) of Mucii ni Mucii as well as working on an English Translation of Mucii ni Mucii.

About us

Nsemia Inc. Publishers is a Canadian-based publisher with owners of Kenyan origin. We focus is on African-based stories and how they impact African peoples on the continent and in the Diaspora. We aim at bringing to the fore the many untold stories that enrich African lives; stories that have a bearing on Africans and contribution to the global village. The African focus is important to us for we believe that there is a lot of rich culture on the continent and among its people in the Diaspora that could enrich the world’s cultural mosaic. As well, in a region and communities that faces substantial cultural onslaught from especially the West, there is a need to preserve the rich cultural heritage for posterity.

Our focus is summed up by the motto: Bringing You Untold Stories, with a key objective being nurturing artistic talent to express themselves through story-telling, poetry, drama, music and any artistic expression.

We offer insightful guidance in the writing process, editing and (eventually) publication. In addition, there is active marketing and promotion of published works to ensure they reach desirable audiences.

The partnership with the writer aims at mutual growth in an attempt to enrich authors’ lives, encourage writing and reading culture of African peoples, and leave the written word for future generations. Below are the key focus areas:

- The African Heroes Project: this seeks works that depict African heroes from various African people both on the continent and in the Diaspora.

- Biography Series: the objective here is to capture the personal stories of personalities that have played various roles in shaping nations’ destiny in Africa.

- The African Creative Arts & Language Project: this project focuses on works of fiction (novels, poetry, plays, musicals) written (mainly) in English and other African languages such as Kiswahili.

- Theses Project: aims at publishing academic theses pertaining to the African continent and its issues.

Writers choose to work with Nsemia Inc. Publishers due to the caring and nurturing that comes with the relationship. This is partially based on the understanding of the challenges of getting published as an African, in Africa or in the Diaspora. Despite its richness in culture on the African continent and its Diaspora, published works relating to the continent remain small relative to the size and population of its people, its history and cultural and linguistic diversity.
