I was just comparing the so-called free airtime by Safaricom with the 3 bob per minute Celtel offer. My conclusion is that the safcom offer is a hoax and you are much better off talking for 3 bob. This is why.
If you decide to take up the free airtime offer, you have to buy airtime worth at least 100 bob during the day (upto 9pm). Thus guys who specialise in 'flashing' and sending please call me sms will have to buy credit. Guys who use the phones sparingly (20-50 bob per day) will also find themselves 'forced' to buy airtime.
Come 9 pm and the congestion in Safcom is MEGA. You cant go thro' to utilise your free airtime. The Safcom people could also be giving their network some boost in the congestion aspect to make the freebies as few as possible.
On the other hand, calling on Celtel is 3 bob only, meaning that for the 100 bob you put into your Safcom, you have 33.3 minutes to talk in Kenya's most clear network (believe me it is).
Disclaimer: I do not hold brief for Celtel.

Excuse my bias for i do hold brief for Celtel (soon to be Zain group next month). I do agree with you entirely without adding or substracting anything from your comment. It is clear that Zain network never goes on safari, its clarity is unparralled and cost even friendlier. Now, having been bought by Zain formerly MTC Kuwait), i expect the flash funds from oil money to be deployed to launch a fierce marketing blitz that will take the market by storm. On a different note, i do hope you guys participated in celtel ipo in zambia. if you did, goodluck. you can never go wrong on this one!
