A Cabinet minister has stirred a hornet’s nest with a suggestion that Kenyans should accept homosexuality and learn to live with it.
Special Programmes Minister Esther Murugi told participants at a national symposium on HIV/Aids in Mombasa targeting homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers that the government had no option but to address the community’s concerns.
“We need to learn to live with men who have sex with other men… we are in the 21st century and things have changed,” she told the gathering on Thursday.
Participants at the seminar were mainly homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers, dubbed “most at risk population” because their sexual behaviour puts them at greatest risk of HIV infection.
Ms Murugi said the group was an independent constituency and should not be stigmatised because of sexual inclination.
She told the National Aids Control Council to compile statistics to enable the government to develop a policy to cut prevalence rates among the group.
“This symposium is critical in ensuring that risk factors are discussed and taken into consideration in national planning for HIV and Aids,” said the minister.
Religious leaders were on Friday furious at the minister. Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya organising secretary Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa said the utterances were “satanic and contrary to Africa culture”.
“God in his holy books (Quran and Bible) cursed homosexuality and directed us to fight it. The minister has offended Kenyans who passed a new constitution that criminalises the vice,” he said.
Sheikh Khalifa urged President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to take stern action against the minister.
Kenya National Muslim Advisory Council chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao demanded that Ms Murugi resigns or be sacked.
“The minister and National Aids Control Council officials should create their own country which allows homosexual, lesbian and prostitution acts,” he said.

What a shame. She should be fired immediatly even for promotinig satanism, attending a criminal gathering is not a ministers duty. All the Mathira constituensts should take to the streets without delay to distance themselves from this profanity.

Muhuthia, Murugi is the MP for Nyeri town, Mathira people have no say in this.
I applaud this brave women who has trodden where lions hesitate to go. When Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai takes a back seat as some Kenyan's are being denied their basic human rights, it is time for a new kind of leadership. An unconventional leadership that does not just look burry their heads in the sand, but confront contemporary challenges with common sense solutions.
I know that prophets of doom will be saying that she has dug her political grave. It may as well be, but which Nyeri town MP has served more that one term?
It is time for Kenyan's to support Murugi for such demonstration of courage. It is time we rexamined our phobia of our harmless brothers, sisters and those of ambigious sexuality.

Muhuthia, Suppose a Luo say; "These Kikuyus are very very sick. They eat githeri instead of fish. We urgently need to raise money to treat these unfortunate humans"
Homosexuality is not a medical or psychological problem. The person who is discriminated agianst is a victim, not a culprit. The person who discriminates is the one with a problem.
Let us take a moment to think about the two books you mentioned. Let us look at some statistics:
World population: 6.8 billions as of 2009
No of Christians: 2.1 billions No of Muslims: 1.5 billions Total: 3.6 bollion
No of secular, non religious, atheist and agnostics 1.1 billion
Now why should the two religios, whose adherents are just slightly more than half the world's population impose their morality on the rest? Considering that they are the main transgressors of their very laws?

Its interesting to hear buzz words like satanic and unAfrican being thrown around. I'm not an expert in matters religion but I wouldn't have guessed that satanism is the only religion that preaches tolerance.
As a state minister she has an obligation to serve all, fairly and without prejudice. But to some of these bigoted holier than thou preachers and imams, tolerance is a dirty word. As for homosexuality being not African, well maybe - but neither is Islam or Christianity.
I wonder if homophobia is African. I guess we can claim that one.
I think its time Kenyans wake up and smell what Murugi is cooking (all pun intended). Pilipili usoila and all that good stuff. In other words, live and let live.

If a son beds his mother by mutual consent are we supposed to say these are two consenting adults doing nothing to harm fellow humans.

I'm struggling to find a respectiful way to say this, but I must say your analogy above is simply ridiculous and appalling.
I have to confess, I used to have very strong (and warped) sentiments about this issue to an extent of calling for an extamination of those that I regarded as sub-human and whom I also had some other choice words to describe. But life has taught me that my convictions and beliefs are mine, to guide me through life, and not to force down other peoples' throats.
The world is a mess today because some people believe that others must see the world through their eyes.
Heterosexuality does not equate to righeousness - most criminals who rape and murder little children are heterosexuals, so get off your high horse and don't be too quick to judge.
There are some decent people out there who, you might be surprised to find out, do not subscribe to any of your beliefs and dogmas.
If you believe in a Deity that will judge all Mankind, then you must submit that JUDGEMENT is reserved for HIM and HIM ALONE. Worry about how HE will judge YOU. Stop worrying how HE ought to do HIS job. That is called presumption. It's a step removed from blasphemy.

Society has to have values and norms not just individual values, it is the collective value systems that define a society, Anybody going against these norms cast themself from the society The world is a mess today because some people believe that others must see the world through their eyes. the world is in a mess because people have gone against the natural order of things and is not sustainable any more Heterosexuality does not equate to righeousness - most criminals who rape and murder little children are heterosexuals, so get off your high horse and don't be too quick to judge.obvious. You may notice I do not condemn the people, i condemn their despicable habits, i recognise they are sick and need help .

You say that you don't condemn the people yet you call for the firing of a state minister because of a statement she made. What would you rather she had said? Have you considered that she was just stating the government's position? In that case, who should fire her and for what?
