I am aware that words change meaning. But I would like to know who uses these words in the mainstream

1. gicokio
a. a married woman who has left her matrimonial home and returned to her parents
b. A single mother, who did not get married

2. kuguika
a. To have sex,
b. to cover, as in wearing clothes.

3. kariigu
a. uninitiated girl
b. a virgin
c. just any little girl

Who feels that due to the connotations associated with these words, they should be proscribed?

Does anyone know of other controversial words in Gikuyu

Interesting topic; I agree that there are many words whose usage over the years has changed and have become not only insolent but derogatory; used to put down others. Our language must be more dynamic and inclusive than it is and adapt and be relevant not just to us but to circumstances and people around us.I'm thinking of the following archaic words;

Nyukwa - is now an insult although old people get away with it; in my opinion the ugliest kyuk word.

Kihii – is it relevant today? has been used to degrade certain politicians.

Nduriri – who are these? Why don’t we have Nduriris from the east, coast or even from outside the country.

Calico – one can only appreciate the 'cheapness' of the slut if they know what a calico sheet is and they are no longer in circulation.

That’s all I can think of for now and hongera Sajini for keeping the forum alive.

Waikombe,
I am not a language purist, and I know that all efforts towards linguistic prescriptivism are bound to fail. On the other hand, I think there is need for languages to be reformed to exclude some of the biases. You only have to look at some of out nouns, idioms, and proverbs to understand this.

1. ngoma cia aka (a whirwind)
women are only possed by spirits; can never have valid points

2. ukigiite o ta nyukwa (a common derogatory expression)
no woman is clever

3. mundu wa nja ( a woman)
they belong nowhere, neither at their parents, nor their husbands.

4. uka ni wonje ( a male saying)
disabled both physically and mentally as a result of their gender.

Think of these terms: murogi, mundu mugo and muraguri.

Normally, I think women can be arogi, but not andu ago or araguri. am I right? if so, why?

Sajini,

Let me revive this old thread. Some of these terms are no longer relevant particularly among the urbane youth. For instance, "kariigu" mean uncircumsied girl. You and i know that Kikuyus no longer circumcise their girls. With time, the word has lost meaning/relevance.

Gicokio.....I think the term has acquired derogatory connotations in the modern world. Single parenthood and divorce is no longer unusual occurrence among the Kikuyus. It is no longer a taboo among the kikuyus. And by the way, what do you call a man whose wife has left him in kikuyu?
