My name is Safiyyah, kikuyu name is Njeri. I am new here so I just wanted to introduce myself to everybody here (atleast that's the protocol for most boards I have joined actively)
I am happy to have found a kikuyu forum, finally came up on my google! I have been looking for one for a few years actually.
I live in the UK, migrated here when I was 12 and was very much in with the Kikuyu crowd in the UK. However, I converted from christianity to islam when I was 19 (am 25 now) and that alone meant I was ostracised from the kikuyu community. As a matter of fact I had no idea we were so islamaphobic. Anyway I have been muslim a total of nearly 8 years and it has been great getting to know all the other cultures, and communities. However I miss my people, and the fact that I do not have anyone to speak kikuyu to even up to now, was what has been prompting me to keep looking for a kikuyu online community.
I have lost some of my fluency, na nyumite Ndeiya kuguo daragia gikuyu kia ndeiya ti Nairobi. Na githweri, am almost a lost cause with that! I read it like am reading english (accent-wise) and I have very little understanding of tanzanian swahili, so I can forget about joining their forums which have been around a long time. But I still buy Swahili books (yeah they do sell them here, in the large bookstores - major African languages only) or borrow them from the library and read to my 2 little ones.
I am very exposed to different cultures; english, american, asian, oriental (only japan, china and korea), arabs (north african and middle eastern), different europeans, africans from all over the continent so I have a very eclectic collection of friends in real life (of whom I have a great many, which is one of my blessings in my life).
I can be a real essay write because I type fast (not like a secretary though) so I had better stop here.
Njeri wi muhoro, What a shame to them up there.Christianity and Islam were both imposed on us by the colonial powers or slave traders so they are both intrinsically alien to us,hence they shouldn't be used to divide us. Nitwa kugwata ugeni na uigue wi mucie.Yukia njung'wa unyue gachuru ka mukio utuhe cia kuria uma tondu muki okaga na uhoro. Am surprised that you missed us for we have been here for years.
Wakia wakini? Wi muhoro?
