Fifteen Kenyans were shot dead by police in Moshi, Tanzania, in a botched robbery.
A Kenyan woman was arrested in the same incident and an AK47 rifle and five pistols with several bullets were recovered from the suspects.
Police in Nairobi said they had been informed from Moshi that the men were also planning to rescue six Kenyans facing robbery charges.
A top delegation of Kenyan detectives was dispatched to Moshi last night to pursue the issue. The six had been cleared of the charges on Tuesday but were ordered to stay in custody to face other related charges.
Those who police said were to be rescued were named as Wilfred Onyanga, Jimmy Maina Njoroge, Patrick Muthee Murithi, Simon Githinji Kariuki, David Ngugi Mburu and Michael Mbanya Wathigo.
They were arrested in Mozambique in December 2005 as they planned to commit a robbery in Maputo. The six were later charged with robbing a foreign currency exchange bureau of TSh44 million and taking part in the robbery of TSh5.3 billion from the National Bank of Commerce in Moshi.
Details of the shooting were scanty as local police made efforts to gather more.
The incident came almost a month after the arrest of two Kenyans in connection with a $180,000 (Sh12 million) robbery in Mwanga.
One of the suspects is Samuel Gitau Saitoti alias Simo, who is in Kenyan police’s "Most Wanted" list. The other is Peter Michael Kimani alias Kim.
The officers arrested the two in a house in Arusha’s posh Liro Estate and recovered seven guns, including two AK47 rifles with three magazines and 85 rounds of ammunition.
They also found a light machine gun, five pistols with 35 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, two bulletproof jackets, several stones of bhang and $845 (Sh56,000).
The two alongside 11 Tanzanians have been charged with murder and armed robbery at the National Microfinance Bank (NMB) Mwanga Branch.
Detectives from Kenya’s had travelled to Tanzania to seek the extradition of the two but abandoned the mission after they were convinced that there was enough evidence to convict them there.
The Kenyans were part of a seven-man gang that raided the NMB Bank in Mwanga Town on July 11 and killed a policeman.
