Reading the papers yesterday there were several articles on just realesed results on poverty situtation in kenya.

It appears that even with the tremendous growth of 5% of the GDP our fellow citizens about 16 million of them are livign below the poverty line.

Why so? I think the government policies are too skewed and do not work towards addressing the root causes of ppoverty in kenya.

Our inequalities in terms of wealth and natural resources (such as land) distribution needs to be addressed ASAP or you are going to have continued civil strife in RV and other areas as communities fight over these scarce resources.

I wonder if Kibaki and ODM are listening.... Are they going to crackdown land grabbers, corrupt citizens et al.. only time will tell.....

what is your take on the worsernin poverty situation in kenya?

Who is your mather?

Paap Daad I would like you to give me the real meaning of living below the poverty line!
Consider this:
My grandma wakes up early in the morning and takes a cup of milk,a handful sahani of nduma from ngurumo, during linch time she takes ngwaci and githana, during supper the much money she can spend is about ksh 50 to buy a packet of ugali flour amd mark up she will consume this packet for about a week and the kitoweo is terere na managu. If you were to consider the very same menu for someone who lives far away from the gishagi you will have spent not less than ksh 150 for the same food.
There is no way you can convince me that she is leaving below the poverty line so............

What I mean is that if one is not able to secure his short term future, then that person is below the poverty line. In a rural set up, I will only consider a (peasant) farmer, to be above poverty line if he/she can maintain the household living standard in case of a calamity wiping his crops for a season.

In urban scenario, I consider an employee to be above poverty line if he/she can maintain the household living standard for six months, in case he/she is fired by his boss.

Paap Daad,
I like your arguement. Where there is an open mind, there will always be a frontier and You must either modify your dreams or magnify your skills.

History is merely a list of surprises. It can only prepare us to be surprised yet again.

The tendency of the casual mind is to pick out or stumble upon a sample which supports or defies its prejudices, and then to make it the representative of a whole class.
History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.
