i listen to this kamemefm radio and its kinda cool. gives me that "in kenya" feeling. i get like 2 or 3 words...hehe they talk fast and for the songs..zero!
Maria, What a pity that you cannot enjoy the Mugithi section. You should go to sometimes a mugithi session with a Kikuyu let him/her translate for you. This does not mean that the Kikuyus are perverts. I see Mugithi in the Freudian sense.

Well Sajini, i'll give it a try. you might want to first explain what "mugithi" is. i have never heard of it before. Maybe kikuyus are perverts...why would you say that in the first place? Feeling guilty already,eh?
Maria, No they do not, but the obscene songs begins after 11 o'clock. The time the underage are deeply tucked in their blankets.
By the way, there is no perversion in the whole thing. Obscenity in African art need to be put into perspective. I said I like to see it in the Freudian sence because humans need a vent to release their pent up inhibitions. Mugithi provides an arena whene the laws of everyday discourse can be flouted within an acceptable context.

Sajini, The human behaviour is exquisitely rational, moving with subtle and ordered complexity toward the goals the organism is endeavouring to achieve. The natural course of the actualising tendency is, however, often blocked by psychosocial conditions. When this happens, people become estranged from their true nature and may behave irrationally through anti-social and destructive behaviour.Frued was right.
Ok, so we get to release this "energy" and then what..? We'll feel much better? We'll have a clear mind? you're saying that when we listen to these songs we ... wont these "pent up inhibitions" be released with great force that could even cause more damage? i would think that this Mugithi is for married people only. Am not there yet so i dont think i should go for it.
Maria, The release of the pent up energy is cathartic. It expurges our dark thoughts, and our bodies are purified. The release cannot cause more damage bacause it is not being unleashed on hapless people. It is like an agreement that people have to suspend conventional norms for the sake of this purifying rite. Once this is done, things can go back to normal. We do this all the time when we are joking, dancing etc.
Mugithi is not just for married people. It is a social event that incorporates adults from from all walks of life. It is a revival of what was proscribed by the wazungus during the colonial period. All the Gikuyu cultural dances and other traditional ritual were banned. In some of these ceremonies, obscene songs are dances were allowed. These songs were sang by both the old women as well as young me who weer allowed no indulge in obscenity in during their initiation period. Now Mugithi has come to revive that element of the Gikuyu culture that was almost drifting to obscurity, albeit in a modern arena.

Sajini, picturing someone who has gone for Mugithi.. s/he listens to these words... s/he begins to react to these words..u know the brain send messages to the ....bla..bla.. At this point the blood if flowing fast and for a guy its faster... There is so much energy s/he has at this moment which has to be released. I dont get it... when does this person use up this energy? Or do they play another song that cools people down Sajini, whats the difference between Mugithi and say...watching porn?
